Left blasts Trump for pushing ‘patriotic education’

President Donald Trump is trying his best to make patriotism great again – but his opponents are accusing him of engaging in “brainwashing” of America’s youth to accomplish that.

“Today, I’m also pleased to announce that I will soon sign an executive order establishing a national commission to promote patriotic education,” said President Trump during an appearance Thursday at the National Archives Museum. “It will be called the 1776 Commission.”

How do you feel about President Trump’s call for ‘patriotic education’?

The president’s visit coincided with Constitution Day. Regardless, the president said “a radical movement is attempting to demolish our treasured and precious inheritance.”

“We can’t let that happen,” the president continued. “Left-wing mobs have torn down statues of our founders, desecrated our memorials, and carried out a campaign of violence and anarchy, [while] far-left demonstrators have chanted the words ‘America was never great.'”

The president went on to say that the left has launched a vicious and violent assault on law enforcement, something he considers “the universal symbol of the rule of law in America.”

“These radicals have been aided and abetted by liberal politicians, establishment media, and even large corporations,” he added.

“I so appreciate the president’s leadership on bringing a renewed focus to our founding documents and the Constitution and the importance of the words that are in the Constitution and what that means for everyone in this country,” said Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on the “Washington Watch with Tony Perkins” radio program.

“Unfortunately, we know that too many young people today have very little knowledge or understanding of history and how their government is actually constructed and what the original founders had in mind.”

But not everyone is a fan of a 1776 Commission.

“Trump just announced he will soon be signing an executive order establishing a ‘national commission to promote patriotic education’ called the ‘1776 Commission,'” tweeted Yamiche Alcindor, the White House correspondent for PBS. “It is unclear what that means but he has been trashing the ‘1619 Project,’ which aims to educate the nation with facts.”

That resulted in a lot of people tweeting at Yamiche to say the 1619 Project was misleading and that The New York Times ignored a fact-checker. Nonetheless, the criticisms of a 1776 Commission continued.

“1776 Commission sure sounds better than ‘Trump Youth,’ but it’s functionally no different than what Hitler did to brainwash a generation into accepting the Holocaust,” tweeted filmmaker Chip Franklin.

Program host Tony Perkins countered such reactions. “If you really don’t know history and it’s not been taught to you and you don’t have an understanding of it, how can you have an appreciation for the country?” said Perkins, president of Family Research Council. “It’s almost impossible.”

    DeVos agreed with that argument.

“… I think we’re unfortunately seeing some of the downstream implications of that ignorance in some of our major cities across the country today,” the education secretary added.

“So, again, I am really appreciative of the president’s focus on this and the announcement of a 1776 Commission. That will bring a renewed focus to the importance of learning our history, of appreciating what we have learned from history and what we don’t want to repeat in the future – because we know that if you do not learn history, you are doomed to repeat things in history that we really don’t want to relive.”
