Correction | Unofficial Results of the May 1, 2018 Special Recall Election

Up to 3,023 Additional Ballots Remaining to be Tabulated for May 9 Count   

CORRECTION: The number of Vote-by-Mail (VBM) ballots received at the polls was incorrectly reported on May 2. The actual number of VBM ballots received at the polls on May 1 was 1,745. (The 516 provisional ballots were mistakenly included in the previously reported 2,261 VBM number).

UPDATE: As of May 7, there are 2,501 Vote-By-Mail ballots received at the polls, City Clerk’s office, and by mail with a May 1 postmark, and 522 provisional/conditional ballots, for a total of 3,023 ballots remaining. Please note that this is a raw number, as the VBM ballots still need signature verification and the provisional/conditional voters must be confirmed to be registered and not have voted elsewhere, for this election.

Oxnard, California – Oxnard City Clerk Michelle Ascencion has announced the unofficial results for the May 1, 2018 Special Election, following the first tabulation of ballots on Election Night.

Based on the initial count, it appears the recall of the four officers is not successful.

To recall Mayor Tim Flynn: Yes – 4,475; No – 5,325.
To replace Mayor Flynn: Aaron Starr – 2,631; Miguel Lopez – 2,613; Lawrence Stein – 417; Modesto “Morey” Navarro – 269; Robert L. Sumpter – 139.

To recall Council Member Bert Perello: Yes – 3,936; No 5,769.
To replace Council Member Perello: Kari Cryder – 4,534.

To recall Council Member Carmen Ramirez: Yes – 4,038; No – 5,662.
To replace Council Member Ramirez: Francine Castanon – 2,929; Al Velasquez – 1,220; Ambrosio Casanova Jr. – 1,077.

To recall Council Member Oscar Madrigal: Yes – 4,048; No – 5565.
To replace Council Member Madrigal: Miguel Martinez – 1,820, John F. Ragan – 953; Angel Garcia – 880; Enrique Petris – 862; Daniel Chavez, Jr – 668.

These numbers reflect the first count of the 7,257 Vote-By-Mail ballots (signature verified) received through April 30, and the 2,601 ballots cast at the City’s 28 polling locations on May 1, showing a 12.4% turnout of the city’s 79,068 registered voters. Still remaining to be counted are Vote-By-Mail (VBM) ballots received at the polls on May 1 and those arriving by mail from May 1 through 4 (postmarked on or before May 1), and provisional ballots. On May 1, the City Clerk’s office received 2,261 VBM ballots at the polls, 744 VBM ballots in the mail and dropped off at the office, and 516 provisional ballots.

The second count of the remaining ballots will take place on May 9 at 300 W. Third Street in the first floor “Human Resources Activity Room.” Ballot counting will take place at 1:30 p.m. The city website, at www.oxnard.org/electionresults.php, will be updated with the second-count following tabulations on May 9. It is anticipated that this will be the final count of the ballots.

The City Clerk expects to bring the certification of the election to the City Council at its May 22 meeting.
