911 Communication Center Ready for Emergencies in Simi Valley

On March 26, 2018 and again on March 30, 2018, the Simi Valley Police Department’s 911 Communication Center and its personnel temporarily relocated from its regular location at the Police Department to an alternate emergency location. No, there wasn’t a problem or equipment malfunction, it was all part of the Police Department’s ongoing efforts to be vigilant and ready for natural disasters and other types of emergencies.

The 911 Communication Center is no exception to being ready and moving the center is part of the Department’s emergency preparedness plans. Although 911 Communication personnel receive regular training on emergency response, this relocation exercise offers a unique training opportunity that both challenges them and trains them to be able to quickly move 911 communication operations at a moment’s notice and without interruption to daily operations.

In a cooperative partnership with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the Simi Valley Police Department’s 911 Communication Center can seamlessly move to the East County Sheriff’s Station on Olsen Road in Thousand Oaks during an emergency. This uniquely designed alternate communication room allows Simi Valley 911 Communications and the Dispatchers who operate it to be relocated during a catastrophic emergency when the existing equipment at the Police Department or the building itself is rendered unsafe or inoperable.

Although it would seem to most that moving a 911 Communication Center would disrupt daily operations, nothing could be further from the truth. Because of well thought out plans, the type of equipment that the Police Department uses and our quality Communication Center personnel, moving the Communication Center is actually easier than one would think and it can be done without interruption to police services. In fact, this isn’t the first time that the Communication Center has tested its ability to be temporarily moved at a moment’s notice as moving the 911 Center is a routine part of police operations. The ability to move the 911 Center assists the Police Department to maintain all of their police functions during a major event and is part of our ongoing effort to insure that we provide our citizens with the best equipment and response during any incident at any time.
