Two publishing pros to speak about what writers must do at Feb 26 meeting of IWOSC/SPAWN

The February 26 meeting of IWOSC/SPAWN Ventura County will host two distinguished publishing pros, literary agent Toni Lopopolo and renown award-winning editor Shelly Lowenkopf.  In a special joint speaker meeting, this dynamic duo will discuss the info you need to grab a reader’s attention from the first page.

“I have been fortunate to know both Shelly and Toni for a number of years,” said Kathleen Kaiser, SPAWN president and meeting organizer. “Listening to them and applying what they say is like taking a master’s class in writing. That may be because Shelly taught the masters in creative writing course at USC for 30 years!”

Between them, Toni and Shelly have written hundreds of reader reports, presented fiction projects to editorial boards, and worked as shirt-sleeve editors with an impressive array of writers in several major publishing houses. Fifty years into his career, Shelly is still editing National Bestsellers and Toni talks with publishing house editors daily for her clients. They know what is selling now and will share that knowledge, leaving you with the strengths and muscle memory you need to produce a story that sells and resonates in today’s competitive book market.

The event is a combined effort of the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) and the Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network (SPAWN), a national literary organization based in Ojai. The meeting begins at 6:30 pm in the meeting room of the Newbury Park Library and is open to the public. There is a $5 fee. RSVPs are requested but not required.

About the topic

Are your characters cheating on you?We all know that characters have to have an agenda, but maybe your characters don’t want enough. Ask yourself if your character has what it takes to be a monomaniac, because yes, every memorable character from Mrs. Dalloway and Anne of Green Gables, down to Holden Caulfield, Huck Finn and even The Girl On The Train, Gone Girl, want more than a little.

And maybe you don’t remember Inspector Javert from Les Miserables, or Captain Ahab from Moby Dick. But millions of readers do, and hundreds of literary agents and book editors are in on that one. Maybe your characters don’t want enough. If you listen, Toni and Shelly can help.

With due apologies to President Trump, how big is your feature character’s conscience?Conscience is the place you have to visit, because that’s the most important aspect of your character. After ten minutes of listening to Toni’s C-E-N formula for constructing each character in your story, you’ll see the change in your characters behavior and the way agents and editors respond to your material. You won’t get C-E-N from anyone but Toni and Shelly, so listen up.
