OXNARD, Calif.- On Friday evening at 8:19 pm the City of Oxnard and nearly all of Southern California were rocked by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. Like the July 4th 6.4 magnitude quake the epicenter was located near the desert town of Ridgecrest, California. The Friday evening quake was substantially stronger than the July 4th event with shaking felt as far away as Las Vegas and Arizona.
During the Friday quake the City of Oxnard experienced some damage to boat docks in the Mandalay Bay portion of the Channel Islands Harbor. Other minor issues such as sparking transformers and limited power outages were reported in Thousand Oaks, Ojai and Fillmore. Rail service to the area was temporarily shut down until it could be determined the tracks were safe but service has been restored and trains are running normally as of this time. Reservoirs and dams in the area were inspected and all operators report they have experienced no damage. Due to the type and location of the quakes, there was NO tsunami danger along the coast and no tsunami warnings were issued. At this time there are no reports of injuries in Ventura County resulting from the quake.
Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have warned the area may experience a large number of aftershocks in the days to come. Some aftershocks may be of a magnitude 6.0 or greater. Aftershocks could cause additional damage to structures already affected by the July 4th quake. They also state that the recent quakes are not likely to trigger a larger quake on the San Andreas Fault.
In partnership with the Ventura County Office of Emergency Services, Oxnard City Officials continue to monitor the situation and conditions throughout the area. Residents are encouraged to think of these quakes as a “Wakeup Call”! We live in an area where earthquakes are a constant threat and we must be ready at any time! In the event of a major quake or other disaster, we must all be ready to be completely self-sufficient for 5 to 7 days!
To be prepared you should have food, water, medications, flashlights (with extra batteries), a battery powered radio, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. You should also take the necessary steps to take care of children, anyone in your family with special needs and the elderly. Don’t forget about your pets. Do you have food, water and a crate for them?
It’s important to remember that when you feel a quake, don’t run outside, stay where you are and; “Duck, Cover and Hold On’! After the quake check for hazards such as toppled furniture, broken glass, gas leaks, damaged electrical wires and downed powerlines. If you observe serious damage or dangerous conditions report it immediately by calling 911 from your home or cell phone.

ACTUALIZACIÓN (SÁBADO, 6 DE JULIO – 2:00 PM): TERREMOTOS DE RIDGECREST
El viernes por la noche a las 8:19 pm, la ciudad de Oxnard y casi todo el sur de California fueron sacudidos por un terremoto de magnitud 7,1. Al igual que el terremoto de magnitud 6.4 del 4 de julio, el epicentro estaba situado cerca de la ciudad en el desierto Ridgecrest, California. El terremoto del viernes por la noche fue sustancialmente más fuerte que el evento del 4 de julio con temblores que se sintieron a una distancia como Las Vegas y Arizona.
Durante el terremoto del viernes, la ciudad de Oxnard experimentó algunos daños en los muelles de barcos en la parte de Mandalay Bay del puerto de Channel Islands. También afirman que no es probable que los recientes terremotos desencadenen un terremoto mayor en la falla de San Andreas.

Después del terremoto, revise si hay peligros como muebles derrumbados, vidrios rotos, fugas de gas, cables eléctricos dañados y líneas eléctricas caídas. Si observa daños graves o condiciones peligrosas, informe inmediatamente llamando al 911 desde su casa o teléfono celular.
