Oxnard Heritage Square | COVID not the first epidemic to hit town

History Repeating Itself: In 1918 the world wide flu epidemic hit Oxnard. Over 200 cases were recorded here in one day. On another day, 80 cases were reported from the Sugar Beet Factory on that day alone.

All public gathering places were closed: schools, churches, the Opera house, saloons and pool halls. This was strictly enforced by the police. There was nothing doctors could do. The hospital was overflowing. After six weeks, only schools and churches were allowed to reopen.

We are smarter and stronger today folks. We want all Oxnardians to make it through this. Please follow the instructions being provided by your community leaders. #OxnardStrong #805Strong
