On August 28th, 2020, detectives assigned to the Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail arrested Sylvia Coronado and Juan Soto for being under the influence of illegal drugs and for being in possession of other people’s identifying information.
On August 28th, 2020, Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail detectives were conducting high visibility patrols within the City of Camarillo. At about 5:18 PM, they responded to a call for service related to suspicious subjects in the area of Cottage Grove Avenue and Ridgeview Street. Sylvia Coronado and Juan Soto were contacted in the area and matched the description of the suspicious subjects. During the investigation it was determined that Coronado and Soto were on Ventura County probation with search terms.
During the search of Coronado’s purse, detectives located identifying information of another individual consisting of social security card, driver’s license, credit card, and a forged check. Detectives contacted the victim and learned their wallet had been stolen approximately 3 months ago in the City of Ventura. Based on the evidence located at the scene, detectives believe the stolen personal identifying information was used to open a fraudulent credit card account.
At the conclusion of the investigation, detectives arrested Coronado for PC 530.5(a)-Identity Theft, PC 470(d)-Forgery, and HS 11550(a)-Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance. Soto was arrested for HS 11550(a)-Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance. Both were booked in to the Ventura County Pre- Trial Detention facility. Soto was later released from custody with a pending court date. Coronado posted $60,000 bail and was released from custody with a pending court date in September.
Identity theft is when someone takes personal information that does not belong to them, such as a name, date of birth, social security number or financial institution account number, and uses that information for unlawful purposes. Identity theft crimes affect millions of victims each year in the United States. Some methods to protect yourself from Identify theft include not sharing personal information with unknown sources, not carrying your social security card around in a wallet, collecting your mail every day and frequently reviewing your credit card and bank account statements for unauthorized activity.
The Camarillo Police Department Special Enforcement Detail is a plain clothes unit that conducts a variety of investigations of criminal activity occurring within the City of Camarillo. The goal of SED is to reduce property crime and violent crime through investigations and directed enforcement.
