If Jenner is on the ballot … how do you vote?

The effort to recall California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has been in the headlines for months; and earlier this week the secretary of state’s office in Sacramento confirmed there were enough verified signatures on petitions to trigger an election.

The ballot to recall Newsom will have two questions – (1) Should you recall Governor Newsom? and (2) Who should replace him? If more than 50% of voters choose “Yes” on the first question, then Newsom’s tenure as governor will be over. The votes on the second question will only be counted if more than half of the voters say yes to the first.

It’s possible that the ultimate choices for a replacement could include transgender former Olympian Bruce Jenner, who’s running as a Republican, or any of a dozen radical California Democrats.

Dr. Robert Jeffress of First Baptist-Dallas says it’s important to vote for the candidate who closely aligns with biblical values. But if none are to be had – you’re on your own, he says.

“I can’t tell people how to vote in a situation like that,” he shares. “I think we need to call the situation with Bruce Jenner what it is – gender confusion is an emotional disorder. It needs to be treated compassionately, but it needs to be treated.”

Pacific Justice Institute‘s Brad Dacus is willing to get a little more specific.

“People need to vote for the person who is the most qualified to support issues and policies and legislation that are reflective of a biblical worldview,” he advises. “And as long as that’s being achieved and accomplished in their vote, then they have done what was right.”

But while he doesn’t endorse Jenner, Dr. Richard Land of Southern Evangelical Seminary says the prospective Republican candidate does have some good points, describing Jenner as “a strong law-and-order candidate” and someone who “favors capitalism as opposed to socialism.”

“[But] does that overcome the fact that if we elected a transgender governor, that makes transgenderism more acceptable?” he wonders. The answer, he says, is it probably would not.

The last time a California governor faced a recall election was in 2003 – and there were 135 replacement candidates on the ballot. Democrat Gray Davis was recalled (55.4% of voters voted “Yes”); he was replaced by Republican candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger, who received 48.5% of the vote.
