Advisory: Weekend Storms May Bring Coastal Flooding and Dangerous High Surf

A series of storms that will continue through the weekend are expected to bring several inches of rain, gusty winds and damaging surf. High surf warnings are expected for Saturday and the public is encouraged to avoid beach areas.

Areas of the city that are prone to flooding include:

  • Mandalay Beach Road – Oxnard Shores Neighborhood
  • Ventura Road near Wagon Wheel 
  • Ventura Road near Channel Islands Blvd
  • Yucca St near Cloyne St
  • Samuel Avenue
  • Hill Street
  • Oxnard Boulevard from 5th Street to Colonia Road
  • G Street near Durley Park
  • San Marino St
  • Victoria Avenue (north of Gonzales Rd)
  • Arnold Road
  • Dodge Road
  • Perkins Road (south end)

“Residents should avoid flood prone areas if possible and the beach during the storms.  Especially on Saturday when dangerous swells could be as high as 15 feet,” said Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Susan Duenas. 

Oxnard residents and business owners whose property has a history of flooding can obtain free sand and sand bags at the City of Oxnard Corporate Yard. Remember: taking sand from the beach is illegal and can result in a fine.

Residents are encouraged to call 385-8343 to schedule an appointment to pick up sand bags at the Corporate Yard.  The City of Oxnard Corporate Yard is located at:

“In addition, people who plan to travel to other areas of the county need to be aware of the increased risk of flash flooding and mud flows in recent burn areas,” said Duenas.
