California Lutheran University will close the fourth season of its International Film Festival with a free screening of the highest-grossing French-language film released in the United States.

The award-winning romantic comedy “Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain” will be shown in French with English subtitles at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Muvico Thousand Oaks 14.

In this critically acclaimed 2001 film starring Audrey Tautou as Amélie, a young woman looking for love works in a Montmartre cafe. She has experienced an unusual and unique childhood. Even though her mother dies when Amélie is 8 years old and her father exudes coldness, Amélie ultimately flourishes into a charming, healthy, beautiful young woman who strives to positively impact the lives of other people.

The film co-written and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet received numerous awards including the European Film Award for Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematographer; the César Award for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Production Design; the Goya Award for Best European Film and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was nominated for five Academy Awards.

A musical based on the film opened April 3 on Broadway.
