Apartment building evacuated residents as Ventura City Fire put out blaze

rx arial, drugs sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;”>January 3rd at 8:47PM, store Ventura City Fire personnel and units responded to multiple reports of a structure fire in an apartment building in the 700 block of E. Santa Clara St., with reports of at least one person trapped inside.

The first arriving units found heavy smoke and fire showing from the windows of a second story corner apartment at the rear of a 50-unit center-hallway residential hotel. Crews established a water supply and initiated a rapid and coordinated fire attack, while also evacuating the building of its occupants.

The fire was knocked down within approximately 8 minutes of the first arriving unit at the scene, no trapped victims were encountered. All occupants were successful in self-evacuating from the building, two were treated and released at the scene for smoke inhalation and/or minor injuries. The building was red-tagged due to a combination of fire/smoke damage and inoperable utilities. Approximately 40 residents were assisted at the scene by Red Cross, and then relocated to a nearby emergency shelter. The cause and origin remains under investigation, however one suspect was taken into custody at the scene by VPD. No other injuries were reported at the time of this report.
