Arrests made after shooting in Ventura
abortion times;”>At about 2:40 am Friday morning, October 31st. the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a call of two gunshots fired in the 300 Block of West Barnett Street. The caller told dispatchers there was four male suspects involved and after the shots were heard, they got into a tan colored 4-door Honda and left southbound on Olive Street. Responding officers searched the area and did not locate the vehicle or evidence of a shooting.
A few minutes later, a patrol officer observed a vehicle matching the description occupied by four males driving in the area of Seaward Avenue and Poli Street. The officer attempted to make an enforcement stop on the vehicle. The Honda quickly accelerated, traveling southbound on Seaward Avenue towards Main Street while the officer pursued. The vehicle went through a residential area for approximately 1 mile and then drove eastbound ending up on Telegraph Road. It continued eastbound and attempted to make a right hand turn from Telegraph Road onto Brookshire Avenue. The Honda lost control and went up onto the curb and collided into the street sign on the corner.
The four suspects exited the vehicle and ran into the apartment complex in the 6000 Block of Telegraph Road. The officer located a firearm and ammunition in the vehicle at the crash site. Other officers pursued the suspects on foot and a containment perimeter was set up around the complex. A short time later, 18 year old Camarillo resident, Edward Juarez and a Hispanic Juvenile were found hiding and taken into custody. Erick Hernandez (19 year old from Ventura) was observed trying to escape from the perimeter. A K-9 was deployed and assisted in taking Hernandez into custody. Officer’s searched the entire complex and the surrounding area for the last occupant (an Hispanic male 18 to 20 years old) of the vehicle but he is still at large.
Officers were able to make contact with the registered owner of the vehicle involved in the pursuit and confirmed that it was an unreported stolen vehicle from the Saticoy area. At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that Erick Hernandez was the driver of the vehicle, a documented Saticoy gang member. After a medical clearance at VCMC for moderate injuries sustained during his arrest, Hernandez was booked at the Ventura County Jail for felony evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, prior felon in possession of a firearm, hit and run and committing a crime for the furtherance of a gang. Edward Juarez was booked at the Ventura County Jail for resisting arrest. The juvenile was cited for resisting arrest and released to his parent.
No officers were injured as a result of this incident. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to call the Ventura Police Department at 339-4309.
