The Road to Tyranny by Don Jans

Bicyclists Invited to “Pit Stop/Energy Station” on Bike to Work Day, May 17

    City of Ventura

Bicycle commuters are invited to a “Pit Stop/Energy Station” on Friday, May 17, 2019, at the corner of California and Santa Clara streets from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to observe Bike to Work Day.  The pit stop offers new and regular riders refreshments, a free mini-tune-up on their bicycle, and the chance to enter a raffle for prizes contributed by our local businesses. City staff will be at the event to provide important information on bike safety.

May is National Bike to Work month; May 13-19 is Bike to Work Week. Bicyclists are reminded to exercise safety while on the roadways and follow these five Rules of the Road from the League of American Bicyclists:

    1. Follow the law. Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. Obey all traffic signals and signs.

    2. Be predictable. Always try and ride in a straight line. Be clear on your intentions with motorists as you ride. Use signals, sound, and sight to ensure communication

    3. Be conspicuous. Visibility is key. Ride where you are most visible and wear bright and reflective clothing.

    4. Think ahead. Anticipate what pedestrians and motorists will do next. Be aware of driveways and blind turns. Look for debris and other road hazards.

    5. Ride ready. Before riding be sure to do an “ABC Quick Check”. Check that your Air and Brakes are working, your Chain runs smoothly, and Quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies appropriate for your ride and always were a helmet.

The public is encouraged to cheer on the riders during the Amgen Tour of California Bicycle Race on Thursday, May 16, 2019, as they ride through the streets of Ventura or at recommended viewing locations including Kellogg Park, Summit Drive atop Grant Park (walk-in only, no vehicles) and at the free, all-ages Amgen Tour of California hospitality and lifestyle festival starting at 10:45 a.m. at the start/finish line off Shoreline Dr.  View the map here.

Ventura is recognized as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists and this event encourages more residents to consider riding a bike to work.
