Bringing home the bacon west coast style

By Debra Tash
Maybe I’m just getting cynical or just waking up. Yesterday in her press release: “Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) announced more than $600,000 in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for much-needed infrastructure projects at the Camarillo and Oxnard airports.”
That’s so nice. Except where was she when she wasn’t running for reelection? It’s nice to get gifts, really neat, everybody likes to be remembered, the veterans who have given their all for us, the citizens of our county who work hard for their money and even those who need a helping hand, and those of us who so willing give it. It’s nice to get a thank you, to know our civil servants are, well, serving our best interests. So Julia Brownley is bringing money into Ventura County, Federal money–someone else’s money–to do what? Not to do her job, but so she can keep her job. She’s trying to buy our love.
From her press release:
We have identified critical needs to maintain our aviation facilities in Ventura County, and working closely with our partners in the FAA we have secured the federal grants to accomplish the projects budgeted for this year in their entirety,” said Todd McNamee, Director of Airports for Ventura County. “The projects include pavement maintenance of access roads and aircraft parking aprons at our airports. The contracts came in under budget. Camarillo Airport will receive $415,464 and Oxnard Airport will receive $227,169. Both projects are for the rehabilitation of the apron pavement, which is necessary to maintain structural integrity of the pavement.”
Didn’t those airports need identifying last year or the year before that? And isn’t bringing home the bacon as old a political ploy as bread and circuses were in ancient Rome? Shouldn’t the job of a congressperson be to uphold the Constitution and to act in the best interests of every citizen, not just those of their district come election time but every time. Why not do it for the hard working individuals who don’t have the opportunity to buy favors to keep their jobs with someone else’s hard earned bucks. Now wouldn’t it be nice if you stopped trying to buy our love, Ms. Brownley, and just did your job.
