Cal Lutheran presents free dance concert: Annual event fueled new dance minor to start in fall

    0

A performance highlighting California Lutheran University’s growing dance program, which will be marked by the addition of a minor in fall, will be presented on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6.

Student choreographers will present their creative work during Moving Images 2017, which will begin at 8 p.m. in Preus-Brandt Forum on the Thousand Oaks campus. The concert is the culmination of the work of four students in the spring semester Dance Composition class. Twenty-three Cal Lutheran students will perform 15 dances encompassing contemporary, hip-hop, modern and ballet.

The Dance Composition course and Moving Images helped propel a five-year effort to establish a dance minor at Cal Lutheran. The new minor will be available to students starting this fall.

Two dances from last year’s Moving Images concert were presented at the American College Dance Association regional conference hosted by El Camino College in April. One or two dances will be selected from this year’s concert to be presented at the 2018 ACDA Baja region conference.

The concert’s choreographers are Nadine Abukhzam, a sophomore interdisciplinary educational studies major from Thousand Oaks; Jennifer Anderson, a sophomore physics and math major from Simi Valley; El Caris Camarillo, a freshman psychology major from Simi Valley; and Amy Craig, a freshman marketing communication major from Oakdale.

Moving Images 2017 also will include a dance directed by guest artist Patricia Davis. The dance is a re-creation of a historic ballet work, the “Pas de Quatre,” first performed in 1845. Davis was born in Los Angeles and received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to the School of American Ballet at an early age. She joined the Stuttgart Ballet in Germany at age 17 and later returned to New York to dance with Harkness Ballet, American Ballet Theater and Ballet Repertory. She then joined the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. After returning to Los Angeles, she and her husband, dancer and choreographer Patrick Frantz, acquired the Rozann Zimmerman Ballet Center where they taught for nearly 20 years. Davis launched rzbcPilates in 2004.

The Theatre Arts Department is sponsoring the free performances.
