Camarillo Actively Pursuing CARES Act Funding

Camarillo, California – The City of Camarillo is eligible to apply to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for a $192,347 supplemental Community Development Block Grant for prevention, preparation, and response to Covid-19 (CDBG-CV), made available to HUD through the CARES Act.

The City advertised the availability of funds on July 24, 2020, and accepted funding applications from four local non-profit agencies who provide direct assistance to Camarillo residents and have been negatively affected by COVID-19. The City intends to provide the grant funding to each agency that applied, including Project Hope Food Pantry operated by St. Columba’s Parish, Ventura County CAREGIVERS, Saint Vincent de Paul Blessed Junipero Serra Conference, and Lutheran Social Services.

“We are very grateful to have this additional $192,000 in CDBG Funding from HUD to help our community, while facing some of the many challenges associated with the Covid-19 pandemic,” expressed Joe Vacca, Director of Community Development. “The money will be used to provide additional help, including food support and rent assistance to those in need.”

At their meeting of September 9, 2020, the Camarillo City Council reviewed the funding applications and the preliminary funding allocations. Per HUD regulations, these activities will be included in the City’s FY 2020/21 Action Plan Amendment, which will be brought to the Camarillo City Council for consideration at the September 23, 2020 public hearing.

After City Council approval on September 23, 2020, the plan must be submitted to HUD for review and approval before executing funding agreements and disbursing the funds. Funds are anticipated to be received and disbursed as early as November 2020.
