Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release
During the weekend of August 21, 2020, a burglary occurred in the 100 block of Lantana Street in the City of Camarillo. The burglary resulted in the loss of multiple assault rifles, assault rifle upper receivers, assault rifle lower receivers, shotguns, handguns, firearm optics, and additional firearm parts.
During the second week of September 2020, Detectives from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Special Crimes Unit served search warrants for unlawful firearms activity at four locations in the cities of Oxnard, Ventura, and Camarillo. As a result of the search warrants, most of the stolen firearms were recovered and additional unlawful firearms including assault rifles were also seized. A total of 14 unlawful firearms were seized from three separate locations. At one location, suspected bomb making materials were located and turned over to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson Unit for additional investigation.
As a result of the investigation, Matthew Dennis was arrested for California Penal Code 27545 [Unlawful firearm transfer], Rogelio Lara was arrested for California Penal Codes 27545 [Unlawful firearm transfer], 29800(a)(1) [Felon in possession of a firearm], and 30305(a)(1) [Felon in possession of ammunition], and Damyan Dinev was arrested for California Penal Codes 27545 [Unlawful firearm transfer], 30605(a) [Possession of an assault weapon], 30600(a) [Manufacturing an assault weapon], and 18720 [Possession of an explosive substance].
All three suspects were booked at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility. Criminal charges are currently pending on all three suspects and the investigation is still ongoing.
