Camarillo | Suspect Arrested for Shoplifting and Possession of Burglary Tools

Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release

Deputies assigned to the Camarillo Police Directed Enforcement Unit arrested Carlos Sanchez Hernandez for shoplifting and possession of burglary tools.

On 09/03/20, deputies assigned to the Camarillo Police Directed Enforcement Unit were conducting high visibility patrols in the area of the Outlet Malls. While in the area, they received information from a local business that a theft had just occurred and that the suspect was attempting to leave the business with the stolen property.

Direct Enforcement Unit deputies quickly arrived on scene and located the theft suspect as he was attempting to walk away from the business. Upon seeing deputies, the suspect immediately dropped the property he was holding. During the course of the investigation, the suspect was identified as Carlos Sanchez Hernandez. The property he dropped was confirmed to be stolen from the local business. Sanchez Hernandez was also in possession of a device used to defeat the magnetic sensors commonly utilized by retailers to prevent thefts. Deputies reviewed security camera footage that further implicated and confirmed Sanchez Hernandez’ involvement with criminal activity inside the business.

Based on the results of the investigation, Sanchez Hernandez was arrested for PC 459.5 / Shoplifting and PC 466 / Possession of Burglary Tools. The stolen property was returned to the business. Sanchez Hernandez was booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility and was later released with a court date set in November of 2020.

This investigation, arrest, and recovery of stolen property were a direct result of a collaborative effort between the Camarillo Police Department and local businesses. Shoplifting and theft from stores, including employee and vendor theft, cost retailers billions of dollars per year. The Camarillo Police Directed Enforcement Unit focuses on theft related investigations occurring in Camarillo’s business and commercial areas, including the Outlet Malls. The unit investigates thefts, organized retail theft groups and stolen vehicles. The deputies assigned to the unit also conduct high visibility patrols in Camarillo’s retail business areas in an effort to deter criminal activity.

The Camarillo Police Department would like to thank members of our community for their on- going support and due diligence in providing information to assist our agency in solving crimes and arresting those responsible. Anyone with information regarding criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Camarillo Police Department at 805-388-5100.
