Camarillo | Suspect arrested for theft of a motor vehicle

Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release

A suspect was arrested for stealing a motor vehicle while the victim attempted to visit a gravesite at a local cemetery. The vehicle was stolen from the 2000 block of Howard Road.

On 4/18/2021, patrol deputies assigned to the Camarillo Police Department were dispatched to a stolen vehicle that had just occurred. A citizen began to follow the suspect driving the stolen vehicle through city streets of Camarillo. The citizen was able to update Sheriff’s Dispatch about the stolen vehicle’s location.

Deputies quickly responded and a sheriff’s helicopter was requested as the driver was driving recklessly. The stolen vehicle drove south on Lewis Road and abruptly stopped in the 1900 block of Lewis Road along the right shoulder. As deputies were arriving, the suspect, identified as Ileana Tobo, exited the stolen vehicle and entered a travel trailer. The trailer was parked on the side of the road attached to a pickup truck.

Deputies began giving admonishments immediately for the occupants of the trailer to exit. A male subject complied and exited the trailer. Tobo refused to surrender peacefully and additional deputies and resources responded to assist including a sheriff’s helicopter and a sheriff’s K9. Two patrol units from the California State University Channel Islands Police Department also responded to assist.

Tobo never exited the trailer. After more than an hour of attempted negotiations and de- escalation, deputies forced entry into the trailer and located Tobo. Tobo appeared to be hiding under a blanket on the bed, but deputies discovered Tobo was actually suffering from a drug overdose.

A deputy with the Sheriff’s Office rendered medical aid and quickly administered Naloxone. The Naloxone had the desired effect and further advanced medical care was provided by the Ventura County Fire Department and American Medical Response ambulance company. Tobo was further treated at a local hospital.

Ileana Tobo was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for violation of Vehicle Code 10851(a) -Theft of a Motor Vehicle and violation of Penal Code 148(a)(1)- Resisting, Obstructing or Delaying a Peace Officer. Tobo’s bail was set at $50,000 and she remains in custody at the Todd Road Jail.

The Sheriff’s Office began deploying Naloxone kits in every patrol vehicle in August of 2019. Naloxone is a medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdose.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public not to leave keys in their vehicles and to lock their vehicles. Motor vehicle theft has increased throughout the last year in the city of Camarillo and throughout the county of Ventura.
