CAN-Tree | FOOD Share’s Sixth Annual Food Drive

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (Nov. X, 2017) — Ventura County Credit Union (VCCU), a not-for-profit financial institution, is working with the Foundation of VCCU, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering goodwill and charitable giving in the local community, to collect donations of money or canned goods for Ventura County FOOD Share’s sixth annual CAN-tree food drive.

To support the CAN-tree drive, participants like VCCU can either collect canned goods or “buy and build” by sending funds directly to FOOD Share to purchase cans. Then, on Dec. 1-3, participants will stack the cans into a display of holiday-themed CAN-trees at Figueroa Plaza in downtown Ventura. When the event is over, FOOD Share distributes the donated cans to food pantries that serve Ventura County residents.

Each CAN-tree requires approximately 600-800 cans to build, and VCCU aims to collect enough donations to build 37 trees this year. To reach this goal, the Foundation of VCCU will be collecting monetary donations and canned food items at all eight VCCU branches. VCCU is inviting its members and the community to donate, as well as encouraging its staff to fundraise.

“Each time we participate in CAN-tree, I’m overjoyed by how the community comes together to support such a worthy cause,” said Joe Schroeder, CEO of VCCU and board president of FOOD Share. “The compassion, generosity and holiday spirit the drive inspires is a gift to be a part of. A huge thank you to all who help make CAN-tree possible.”

All funds raised and cans collected during this campaign will go directly to FOOD Share. FOOD Share is able to turn every $1 collected into $5 worth of food. During the last two drives combined, VCCU built a total of 48 trees.

The Foundation came into fruition based on many years of giving — including donations of nearly half a million dollars to local nonprofit organizations and causes — and will continue to provide funding, grants, assistance and education to VCCU’s local nonprofit partners. It focuses on three main categories: the underserved, the beautification and/or preservation of the environment, and the health and well-being of the region. To donate and learn more, visit
