Check Out Our First College Football Rankings of the Year | Number One Might Surprise You

David Hookstead | Reporter

It’s that time of year again for The Smoke Room’s college football power rankings.

The season is about a month away, and I couldn’t be more excited. Within a few weeks, we’ll be sucking down beers, watching our teams and cheering like hell for them to win. As I did last year, I’m bringing you guys my top five teams every week. Let’s begin.

1) Alabama:

Alabama is my choice for the top team in America before the season begins. They have an embarrassment of riches at quarterback with Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts. Both quarterbacks are stars. Nick Saban is going to win a ton of games with either of them. Plus, it’s hard to dethrone the reigning champions when they still are locked down at quarterback, which is by far the most important position in football.

2) Ohio State:

The Buckeyes are loaded with talent and have the best coach in the Big Ten with Urban Meyer. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins is going to be a household name by the end of the season with his skills. The young man is a star waiting to be born. Plus, Nick Bosa might be the most dangerous defensive player in all of America. Expect OSU to dominate.

3) Georgia:

As I wrote with Alabama, the quarterback is the most important position in football, and Georgia’s gunslinger Jake Fromm is one of the best in the country. The Bulldogs could have easily won the national title last year, but Tua and the Crimson Tide simply had different plans. Expect Georgia to dominate the SEC along with Alabama. Those two teams should steamroll everybody else in the conference.

4) Wisconsin:

The Badgers return almost their entire offense. They have a Heisman favorite running back, the best offensive line in America, arguably the best receivers in school history and one of the best coaching staffs in America led by Paul Chryst. Games against Michigan and Penn State will be tough tests, but Wisconsin could win a national championship if their defensive play can match the offense. They went 13-1 last year, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make their first college football playoff appearance this year.

5) Clemson:

The Tigers are loaded at quarterback. Starter Kelly Bryant is back and freshman Trevor Lawrence is widely considered the greatest quarterback to come out of high school in years. Who will they pick? I think Bryant is going to see a majority of the reps, but don’t be surprised if Lawrence gets his reps. Guys like him aren’t made to sit on the bench. Plus, Dabo Swinney is one of the greatest coaches in America. Clemson is lined up to have a hell of a year.

Well, that’s my top five teams before the season starts. Let me know in the comments who you think is the best of them all.
