City Manager Greg Nyhoff announces Darwin Base as Oxnard’s interim fire chief

press_release_iconOXNARD, Calif.–City Manager Greg Nyhoff announced the appointment of Darwin Base as the City of Oxnard’s interim fire chief on Monday, July 25, 2016.  Base, who currently serves as the Assistant Fire Chief, will assume his duties as Interim Fire Chief on July 30, 2016.

Base will be responsible for leading a department that supports eight fire stations, 128 positions and a $24 million annual operating budget.

“I’m confident in Darwin’s ability to lead the Oxnard Fire Department during this transition,” said City Manager Nyhoff. “He’s worked closely with the current fire chief and has demonstrated his ability to quickly adapt to new roles during his time with the department.”

Base has more than 28 years of experience with the Oxnard Fire Department, working in various roles including fire engineer, fire captain and battalion chief. He was hired as the department’s Assistant Fire Chief in November 2015 after the City conducted a nationwide search. Base also has over nine years of experience teaching courses in fire technology for Oxnard Community College as well as for the Office of the State Fire Marshal and California Specialized Training Institute.
