City of Camarillo to Consider Appointment of Gregory Ramirez as City Manager

Camarillo, California – After an exhaustive national recruitment conducted by Peckham & McKenney Inc., the Camarillo City Council is scheduled, on May 27, 2020, to consider the appointment of Gregory Ramirez as the City’s next City Manager.  Since the planned retirement of City Manager Dave Norman in April, Tully Clifford served as Interim City Manager until May 14, 2020.  Upon Mr. Clifford’s retirement, Assistant City Manager Carmen Nichols became Interim City Manager effective May 15, 2020, and is currently serving the City in this position.

With City Council consideration of the appointment on May 27, 2020 Mr. Ramirez would join the City of Camarillo on July 1, 2020.   Mr. Ramirez has served the last 16 years as City Manager in Agoura Hills, and has a total of 27 years of local government experience.  Mr. Ramirez began his career in Agoura Hills in 1998.  After progressing through the positions of Assistant to the City Manager and Assistant City Manager, he was appointed City Manager in 2004.  Prior to working with the City of Agoura Hills, Mr. Ramirez served two years with the League of California Cities southern California office, one year as an analyst with the City of Santa Fe Springs, and in internships with both the City of La Mirada and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.  His experience also includes over 25 years of leadership and volunteer positions with the League of California Cities City Managers Department Executive Committee, Las Virgenes – Malibu Council of Governments, Senior Concerns Nonprofit Board of Trustees, Los Robles Regional Hospital and Medical Center, Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation, and Big Brothers/Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, among others.  Mr. Ramirez is also a member of the California City Manager Foundation and International City/County Manager’s Association (ICMA).  Mr. Ramirez earned a Bachelor of Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in economics, and a Masters of Arts in Economics from Cal State East Bay.

Mayor Tony Trembley, on behalf of the City, noted that “The City Council interviewed several very qualified City Manager candidates and was impressed with Greg’s experience, management style, and accomplishments for leading our organization into the future and for working with the City Council in addressing the important issues facing our City.”

According to City of Agoura Hills Mayor Illece Buckley Weber, under Mr. Ramirez’s leadership, the City accomplished over $80 million dollars in road improvements, a new Civic Center and library, state-of-the-art Event Center and a Recreation Center.  Furthermore, the City restored the historic Reyes Adobe, was presented with balanced budgets every year, and ushered in numerous smart growth developments, as well as achieved open space purchases, naturalization of a creek, obtained reimbursement of Woolsey Fire expenses and cultivated strong working relationships/partnerships with the school district, contract law enforcement, Chamber of Commerce and Water District.

“I am truly excited to being considered for appointment as the Camarillo City Manager and working with the City Council and City staff team in this city renowned and respected for being well-managed, fiscally prudent, service and community focused, and positioned for achieving great technological and economic success in the future,” stated Ramirez.  “It is a dream of mine to serve as Camarillo’s City Manager, and I appreciate the trust, confidence, and support of the City Council and staff in being considered for the position.”

With a commitment and priority to family, Mr. Ramirez is pleased to be celebrating this August his 20th marriage anniversary to Lauren.  Together, they have three wonderful children between the ages of 16 – 11.  In his spare time, he enjoys running and yoga, watching his children’s sporting events and spending time with his family.  If the City Council appoints Mr. Ramirez as the City Manager at the May 27, 2020 City Council meeting, his first day in Camarillo will be July 1, 2020.
