Community Appeals Ventura County Planning Commission Preliminary Approval of Oil Field Expansion

Community groups raise environmental justice concerns

Ventura—County planners will hear from environmental justice organizations, Food & Water Watch and Citizens for Responsible Oil and Gas (CFROG) that have filed an appeal of the preliminary approval to expand the Cabrillo Oil Field without an environmental impact review required by state law. The organizations charge that Ventura County has failed to consider how increased emissions from this large scale, long-term project would impact the health of nearby low-income families who suffer from high rates of asthma, cancer and low birth weights. If approved, the Cabrillo Field would see the construction of four new oil and gas wells and a large oil, water, and gas processing hub within 1,600 feet of two residential mobile home parks near agricultural land. The conditional use permit for the field would be extended for thirty years.

Food & Water Watch and CFROG will present 2,000 petition signatures from local residents demanding an environmental impact review.
