Congressman Garcia Leads Saturday of Service Food Drive

Newhall, CA – Congressman Mike Garcia (R, CA-25) today joined local volunteers in delivering donated food items to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry, a Newhall nonprofit that works to alleviate hunger in the community, especially among local seniors and working families.

Showing their commitment to community service, Garcia volunteers have been collecting much-needed food items over the past week in preparation for the delivery. Today’s Saturday of Service event follows last month’s trash pick-up in Canyon Country.

“Between the pandemic and severe shutdowns, the past year has been incredibly difficult on working families in our community. Many of our friends and neighbors need help, and I’m proud that our incredible volunteers can fill some of the gaps,” said Garcia. “The SCV Food Pantry is a lifeline for many of the folks who were most affected by COVID, and it is crucial that we continue to support local nonprofit organizations as we recover from the pandemic.”

Congressman Garcia has made charity a pillar of his campaign, emphasizing community service through campaign events and personal donations to nonprofits struggling during the pandemic. Last year, Garcia gave the equivalent of 10% of his salary to local charities supporting veterans, law enforcement officers, underprivileged students, and those fighting cancer. His team of volunteers is now doubling down on this commitment to charity with monthly Saturday of Service events.

The 25th district encompasses the cities of Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster and the northern part of the San Fernando Valley.  The median income is $76,866 and the ethnic breakdown is 45.8% White, 8% Black, 7.7% Asian and 35.3% Hispanic.
