County adopts online learning platform to promote employee development

VENTURA, Calif. – The County of Ventura has partnered with LinkedIn Learning to offer County employees thousands of online training videos to help them build and develop new skills and grow personally and professionally.

The LinkedIn Learning content library offers more than 15,000 courses to cover the diverse needs of all County employees. All courses are broken into increments so that employees can learn any time from anywhere.

“We’re committed to being a learning organization,” said County Executive Officer Mike Powers. “To be an effective government organization, we have to develop a culture that not only attracts great people, but also inspires them to do their best work. LinkedIn Learning helps to ensure there are ample development opportunities for employees at all levels.”

The Board of Supervisors and the County Executive Office have created a number of employee development programs – from leadership and career development to diversity-and-inclusion efforts – and made a commitment to promote continuous growth and development for all regular employees. As a result, the County was offering more than 300 in-person trainings a year. That was taking employees away from their desks and their duties for hours at a time.

“Accessibility is the beauty of LinkedIn Learning,” said Learning and Development Manager Betsy Swanson Hollinger. “It allows employees to learn anytime, anywhere; at their desk, at home or on their mobile device. We don’t have to pull them away from their desk to learn.”

The County promotes LinkedIn Learning as an employee benefit and has invested in 9,000 licenses with the company, enough to cover employees across all 26 County departments. To date, more than a quarter of the County’s employees have used the service, watching 53,000 videos.

“These videos have helped employees to develop new skills,” said Swanson Hollinger. “It makes them better equipped for their day-to-day roles. They can sit at their desk, pull up a Microsoft Excel training course, and then stop and start the video as they apply what they’re learning to an actual project on their computer.”

The online LinkedIn Learning system is helping the County create a culture where employees feel supported and are inspired to improve their skills. As a result, the County workforce continues to innovate and create new programs and services to benefit the residents of the county, and the learning environment has proven to be useful in attracting and recruiting new employees.
