County Family Medicine Residency Program named first in the nation

VENTURA, Calif. – The Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center has been named the first in the nation in the latest study by Doximity, the professional medical network, and U.S. News & World Report.

The family medicine residency-training program was recognized as the top program nationally by clinical reputation according to the annual Doximity study, which was released in July 2019. There are 674 Family Medicine Residency Programs in the United States accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

“It’s an honor to once again be recognized as the premiere Family Medicine Residency Program by the physician community and Doximity,” said Family Medicine Residency Director, Dr. David Araujo. “The excellent residents who come to VCMC grow into outstanding family physicians under the tutelage of the many great teachers we have in our medical center. We have been blessed by wonderful support from the VCMC medical staff, the community, and the Board of Supervisors of Ventura County.”

VCMC is distinguished as the only Ventura County academic teaching hospital with a residency affiliated with UCLA School of Medicine. A position in the Family Medicine Residency Program is a sought-after goal for many of the top fourth-year medical students from across the country. The program accepts 15 new residents every year, making a total 45 residents practicing medicine at VCMC during their three-year residency.

“We’re proud and excited about this news,” said Bill Foley, Health Care Agency Director. “It really confirms the high caliber of our Family Medicine Residency Program which attracts the most talented and skilled physicians in the country.”

The residency program launched in 1968 and has graduated more than 600 family physicians, many of whom remained in Ventura County to start their practice. It remains the largest and longest-tenured family medicine residency program in California.
