Cruz takes Iowa Republican caucus, Hillary claims Dem victory

By George Miller

In huge battles by both major parties in their respective Iowa caucuses in a hotly contested presidential race:

  • Ted Cruz won with 27.7% of the vote, followed by Donald Trump at 24.3% and Marco Rubio at 23.1%. Totals dropped off quickly after that, with Ben Carson back at 9.3% and others much less. Candidate Mike Huckabee, a one-time winner of this contest, has suspended his campaign, after dismal results, but others did worse.
  • Hillary Clinton claimed victory in what opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders said was a virtual tie.  This is stunnig news, since Clinton at one time was considered the inevitable nominee. Martin O’Malley has suspended his campaign, making it essentially a two-person race.
