Curator Larry Downing is being honored for all his hard work in the community and his strong partnership with the Port of Hueneme by a “Friend of the Port” award to be presented at 5:30pm on Monday, September 9 at the Oxnard Harbor District Board Meeting.
Although Larry was first appointed to the Port Hueneme Museum Commission in 1995, his vision for “the little museum in the friendly city by the sea” was only able to take shape after he retired from his flooring business. Eventually, he, his late wife Roberta, and a group of hard working volunteers established regular hours of operation, created storyboards to line the walls and designed accessible displays of artifacts, inaugurated the Distinguished Speakers series, started a Community Garden and the Monarch Refuge, and brought Veterans and Memorial Day celebrations to the City for the first time.
Because of Larry’s unflagging enthusiasm and spirit, the Museum has grown into the community meeting place and cultural resource it is today.
