Darwin Base was sworn in as the first “homegrown” Oxnard Fire Chief in nearly a half century at the 11-29-16 City Council meeting, by departing City Clerk Daniel Martinez. Yes, Chief Base worked his way up though the ranks. In the last few years, he had four bosses since 2012, as a new Fire Chief Williams came in 2013, left after a fairly short tenure in 2015, was replaced with an even shorter timer Bryan Brice who lasted only months, then now-departed Police Chief Jeri Williams took over on an interim basis until the selection process played out, which resulted in Base being elevated on an Interimm basis in July and permanently on 11-30-16.

Unlike some of the past appointments, there seems to be no visible internal dissent this time.  City Manager Greg Nyhoff has now appointed two homegrown public safety chiefs in a row. Just recently, longtime OPD member Assistant Chief Scott Whitney was elevated to the top position, too, after Jeri Willaims left.

Base has more than 28 years of experience with the Oxnard Fire Department, working in various roles including fire engineer, fire captain and battalion chief. He was hired as the department’s Assistant Fire Chief in November 2015 after the City conducted a nationwide search. Base also has over nine years of experience teaching courses in fire technology for Oxnard Community College as well as for the Office of the State Fire Marshal and California Specialized Training Institute.
