On this day we remember — Pictorial at Pierce’s Brothers Cemetery

William Hicks, a county resident, photographer and Vietnam veteran, has captured the meaning of this day through images from the commemorative services held at Pierce Brothers Cemetery in Westlake today.

A message from our representative Julia Brownley captures the essence of what you will see here: (edited for brevity)

“Whenever anyone answers the call to service, they dedicate their lives wholeheartedly to a cause greater than themselves.

My father was in the Marines, my brother flew P-3s for the Navy, and my uncles served in the Army and Coast Guard.  Coming from a military family, I know the sacrifices that servicemembers and their families make.

They are our loved ones who leave behind their lives to make protecting us – our freedoms and security – their highest cause.  On Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their last full measure of devotion to that endeavor.

As we pay our respects to the fallen, let us also remember to live by our sacred oath to care for our servicemembers today and every day.”

I am so proud of Pierce Brothers for their generosity to their community and the kind hearts from Citizens Journal to provide some of my photographs in this pictorial of the Patriotic Spirit of Conejo Valley.
