Disbarred Attorney Charged With Fraud

VENTURA, California – District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that Jamaul D. Cannon (DOB 9/3/1976) of Carson, California, was arraigned on a felony complaint charging violations of the unauthorized practice of law, identity theft, false impersonation, second degree commercial burglary, and grand theft. This case was the result of an investigation by the California State Bar and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation.

On August 25, 2016, Cannon was suspended from the practice of law. He was ultimately disbarred on January 19, 2017, for his role in a fraudulent loan scheme. That matter is currently being prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. In November 2016, Cannon charged a Ventura County resident $12,000 for a family law matter. From November through August of 2017, Cannon used the identity of another lawyer to file paperwork and make appearances in Ventura County Superior Court. He also accumulated an $11,000 bill for legal research under that lawyer’s name.

The case is set for early disposition conference on January 31, 2018, at 1:30 p.m., in courtroom 12 of the Ventura County Superior Court.
