sick arial,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;”>Simi Valley Police Traffic Unit Officers contacted 42 drivers during a two-hour period on 4/22/16 in the late afternoon.

38 drivers were cited for various violations involving the use of a cellular telephone and driving. 4 drivers were issued warnings. Two drivers had their vehicles impounded for driver license restrictions / suspensions or other licensing issues.

Officers were in plain view on bicycles or standing at busy intersections within the City making observations and radioing to other officers to contact the drivers and issue citations. Simi Valley Police have used various sources this month to try to educate drivers on the dangers of being distracted, including press releases; Nixle; Facebook; Twitter and the use of a message trailer discouraging distraction.

Although this was a focused effort in the late afternoon, traffic officers and patrol officers will remain vigilant as we continue our nationwide participation to reduce driving distractions. SVPD has conducted several focused patrols this month and there are more to follow.

We ask all our drivers to minimize distractions in the car and to leave the phone alone when operating a vehicle– it will save a life.
