Dog shot by Ventura PD after allegedly threatening Officer

Ventura Police Department – Incident Press Release

On November 24th at 2:40PM two Ventura Police officers went to a home in the 2700 block of Channel Dr. in an attempt to locate a wanted subject from a previous domestic related incident at the residence. The subject, a 44-year-old male adult is a resident at the home and was wanted for felony charges stemming from that incident.

After several attempts were made to contact the subject, the officers determined no one was home. The officers were walking back to their patrol units, when suddenly two dogs exited from a side driveway gate of the home of the wanted subject and charged at the officers. The gate had been left unsecured before the officers arrived.

One of the officers was in the front yard of a neighboring residence and as one of the dogs aggressively advanced towards him, he feared the dog was going to attack him, so he discharged his firearm. One of the rounds struck the dog, which immediately retreated back into the open side gate. The second dog also returned to the backyard of the home.

Additional officers, along with an officer from Ventura County Animal Services, responded to the scene. A short time later, the dog was found in the backyard of the home and it was determined to have died of his injuries. The owner of the dog was contacted and later contacted at the home.

The officer received minor injuries to his arm from falling when the dog was advancing towards him. No one else was injured as a result of the incident.
