     CAREGIVERS Celebrates 30 Years in Ventura County;

    Opening Reception for Year-Long Series of Events Scheduled January 31, 2014

    Ventura, CA—In celebration of the 30th anniversary of CAREGIVERS: Volunteers Assisting the Elderly, the Ventura County Arts Council will host the opening reception of the year-long, “A Wrinkle in Time” from 5:30-7 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014 at the Ventura County Government Center.  Supervisor Steve Bennett and Ventura Mayor Cheryl Heitmann will make brief remarks.

    “A Wrinkle in Time” is the title of a collection of twelve exhibitions and events scheduled through 2014 that will highlight the joys, struggles, triumphs and legacies of seniors in Ventura County and mark 30 years of volunteer caregiving in Ventura County.

    “No one to my knowledge has ever attempted a county-wide project like this,” said Todd Collart, president of the Ventura County Arts Council. “I can’t think of a more compelling way to start a conversation about seniors, aging and care giving than to have our perceptions challenged by the interpretations of our local artists.”

    The opening reception on Jan. 31 at the County Government Center will preview the art that will appear at subsequent venues in 2014 along with a special performance by the Gold Coast Concert Chorus.  CAREGIVERS also will be distributing passports that will entitle the bearer to participate in an anniversary sweepstakes to win a wine tour for six presented by Executive Limousine & Coach.  “To encourage participation in this important CAREGIVERS milestone, the lucky winner will have an opportunity to win one of our most popular wine tasting experiences, “ said John Raftery, owner of Executive Limousine & Coach.  Complete sweepstakes rules are available on the CAREGIVERS website, www.vccaregivers.org.

    “A Wrinkle in Time” is sponsored in part by Collings & Associates, Executive Limousine & Coach, Herzog, Proctor & Gamble, Norm and Lynn Weitzel, Ventura County Arts Council, Mission Produce, and the Ventura Breeze.

    CAREGIVERS: Volunteers Assisting the Elderly is one of the original pilot programs for volunteer caregiving in the United States, serving more than 550 seniors in six cities throughout Ventura County.  Founded in 1984 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet with a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Interfaith Council on Aging, CAREGIVERS collaborated with Trinity Lutheran Church, Ventura; First United Methodist Church, Ventura; Sisters of Holy Cross; National Council of Jewish Women; First United Methodist Women, Ventura; First Presbyterian Church, Santa Paula; Ventura County Church of Religious Science, and the Aid Association for Lutherans, to launch its community-based model which is now emulated by close to 600 volunteer caregiving organizations across the nation.
