Camarillo, Calif.— The Artist Talk series at Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIART) will present contemporary artist Richard Bruland, Saturday, July 13, sharing personal stories about his practice and career, and how a lifelong interest in music led to his opening Bebop Records and Fine Art, a small record store that doubled as a performance venue for the thriving underground music and art scene, in Reseda in 1982. The record store/art gallery/performance place became one of the best-known small venues with performers such as Los Lobos, Lucinda Williams and Beck gracing its stage, and artists such as Raymond Pettibon presenting early shows. The Artist Talk series takes place at 1 p.m. in SCIART’s Blackboard Gallery at 2222 E. Ventura Blvd., Camarillo. Admission is free to SCIART members, $10 for nonmembers.
During its eight years in business, Bebop booked hundreds of music and spoken word performances. For each performance, Bruland created an 8 ½ x 11 poster, which would later gain a permanent place on a wall within the venue. He utilized pen, ink, photocopied images and other techniques to create a variety of styles of art tailored to fit the advertised act. Bruland closed Bebop in 1990 so that he could concentrate on his painting and spend more time with his young children. In 2007, the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) established the Richard Bruland Bebop Records Art Posters Collection as part of its special collections and archives, documenting both the numerous performers that appeared at Bebop and the 1000+ handmade posters Bruland made for the store, as well as many documents and photos relating to the store’s history. The collection is a unique resource for anyone interested in Reseda’s history, the underground punk/new wave scene in the San Fernando Valley and Bruland’s work as an artist.
As a painter, Bruland is represented in the Los Angeles area by Lora Schlesinger Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, by B. Deemer Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky and at Lanning Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia.
