California Native Plant 'Learning and Earning' Volunteer Event

    Event Information

Join SAMOFund for a fun ‘Learn and Earn’ hands-on event and help restore a beautiful young Oak Woodland at Potrero Creek in Newbury Park!

    About this event

The SAMOFund restoration team is excited to invite you to our monthly ‘Learning and Earning’ restoration event, held every 2nd Saturday, where folks can:

    – Get their hands dirty helping with a local restoration project, including weeding, watering and/ or planting (tasks vary by season and location)

    – Receive a free local native plant to take home (limited to 1 plant per person, plant species will change depending on time of year)

    – Join a short ‘mini-workshop’ on various native plant related topics like seed collecting, California native food plants, native plant garden maintenance, etc.

    – Receive free milkweed seed and learn about how to help our local Monarch butterfly populations

The event runs from 9am-12noon, and we ask that you arrive a few minutes early to allow time for registration and a brief safety talk. Mini-classes will take place at 10am and 11am, and we ask that you stay and volunteer for at least 90 minutes to receive a free plant and seed pack.

The area to be worked on and restored is Potrero Creek in Newbury Park. The creek is home to a young native oak woodland, along with milkweed visited by monarch butterflies and various other native plants used by dozens of local birds, insects and other wildlife. Work will consist of watering hundreds of oak trees planted along the creek to keep them alive and healthy as we approach hotter weather., along with weeding and various other restoration tasks. This activity is appropriate for ages 8 and up.

The event will run from 9am – 12 noon .

Please bring water, sunscreen and a sun hat. Wear hiking attire, closed toe shoes and pants and long-sleeved shirt are recommended. Gloves and tools will be provided.
