The Museum of Ventura County is offering a six-week instructed drawing course that explores the various techniques and methods used to depict the human figure on Thursday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m., June 21 through July 26. The course will be instructed by the museum’s first Artist in Residence and local artist Ryan Carr. The class is limited to 25 participants to ensure quality instruction and feedback.

“The classes will be relaxed and friendly, and all skill levels, including beginner, are encouraged to participate,” said Carr. “Working with nude life models, each of the six sessions will focus on a different subject, for example: quick gestural drawings, chiaroscuro (the study of light and dark tonal values), contour drawing, measured drawing or negative space.”

Students will learn how to use different drawing materials, specifically pencil, charcoal, graphite and pastels, how to draw from observation, from a range of short and long model poses and will gain an understanding of the materials used in drawing. Students will also use measuring to improve the proportion of drawings, learn to create effective compositions, and gain anatomical understanding for effective drawing.

The course is open to ages 16 and up, with a parent signature being required for those ages 16 and 17. The course cost is $145 for nonmembers, $130 for members and students with ID. Registration deadline is June 7th. For registration and payment, visit https://venturamuseum.org/event/6-week-life-drawing-course-at-the-museum/. The Museum of Ventura County is located at 100 E. Main Street, Ventura.
