The first meeting will be Thursday, June 23, 6:30 p.m. at the OpenBook Bookstore in The Oaks Mall. Monthly meetings will be held with guest speakers covering topics on the craft of writing, book marketing, illustration, and more. The two organizations forming the chapter are the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) that had a chapter in Thousand Oaks before, and the Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network (SPAWN), a national organization based in Ojai.

“I know there are a many writers in the Thousand Oaks-Ventura area who would love an opportunity to get together with other writers on a regular basis, ” said Flo Selfman, president of IWOSC. “Joining together with the reach of both groups, we hope to provide this market with outstanding education through monthly meetings.”

“SPAWN, with its membership spread across America, has been looking for ways to get members more actively involved,” said Kathleen Kaiser, president of SPAWN. “If this is successful, we want to duplicate it in other areas of the country where we have a concentration of members and other groups wishing to work together.

“Through my work with the 805 Writers’ Conference, I was approached by several writers wanting to form a new group. Since Flo and I had discussed this idea before, it seemed like the time was right to set a date and see if there is interest.”

The meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last up to two hours. Due to space restrictions at the OpenBook Bookstore, people interested in attending are asked to RSVP to [email protected].

The first meeting will be more about organizing the group, selecting topics for future speakers, etc. If the first meeting is successful, monthly meetings with speakers will be held thereafter, and may include readings and discussions of writing-related topics,  along with the ability for members with books to sell them at the meetings.
