Online Seminar Series – NOW ENROLLING

The Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle Intensive

Tuesday Afternoons – September 14 to November 16

How should humans best live?

The influence of Aristotle on the intellectual history of the West is second to none. His logic and ethics ideas are central to many philosophies that subsequently formed the foundations of Western ideals. Aristotle believed that ethical knowledge is not only a theoretical knowledge, but rather that a person must have experience of the actions in life and have been brought up in fine habits to become good. For humans to become virtuous, they can’t simply study what virtue is, but must actually do virtuous things. He conceived of ethical theory as a field with a methodology that must match its subject matter—good action—and must respect the fact that in this field many generalizations hold only for the most part. We study ethics in order to improve our lives, and therefore its principal concern is the nature of human flourishing. What we need, in order to live well, is a proper appreciation of the way in which such goods as friendship, knowledge, pleasure, virtue, honor and wealth fit together as a whole. We invite you to explore this outstanding work with us.

These ten online seminars will take place on Tuesday afternoons, 12:00-1:30PM Pacific Time.
