Ride On! | Adaptive Horseback Riding, Open House for Veterans

Event Details

Ride On is now offering un-mounted Equine Facilitated Growth and Learning classes as well as more traditional horseback riding lessons to post 9/11 Veterans funded through The Wounded Warriors, a nonprofit that offers programs and support services to wounded Vets.

Ride On’s program is designed to help veterans and their families cope with the psychological and physical effects including post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury among other issues. Our Military Service program involves a licensed psychotherapist and specially trained horse staff. Our treatment program uses the same learning model employed by the military in training warriors for combat. According to the Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health (2007) this approach has tremendous impact on “maintaining the psychological health, enhancing the resilience, and ensuring the recovery of service members and their families (which) are essential to maintaining a ready and fully capable military force.”

Ride On teaches adaptive horseback riding to children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities and we provide physical, occupational and speech therapy specializing in using the movement of  the horse to improve specific medical conditions. Founded in 1994, Ride On has given over 100,000 safe, effective and individualized lessons and therapy treatments and currently serves 200 individuals each week. We operate in two locations: serving the Conejo Valley, our 13-acre Newbury Park site is operated in partnership with the Conejo Recreation and Park District; in the San Fernando Valley, Chatsworth is home to our 3-acre ranch which we own.

Adaptive Riding emphasizes recreation, riding skills and fun on horseback. We teach individuals with a wide range of disabilities beginning around age six. Our oldest rider is over 90. We also offer riding lessons for siblings and the general public as space is available.
