Nearly 100 students from Acacia Elementary School and Redwood Middle School will be participating in the event – either walking or riding their bicycles through the intersection of Gainsborough Road and Dover Avenue.

The intersection of Gainsborough Road and Dover Avenue was chosen for the event because a high number of K-8 students pass through this intersection before and after school.  The intersection has a “lighted crosswalk,” which has lights embedded in the pavement as well as flashing beacons. A crossing guard will also be on hand to assist the children in crossing both streets.

“Walk to School” events not only create safer routes for walking and bicycling, they also emphasize important issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, and environmental awareness.  The programs also support connections between families, schools and the broader community.
