     “Writing a Compelling Memoir”

With Diana Raab, MFA, Ph.D., a memoirist, poet, essayist, blogger, thought-provoker, and speaker

For the first meeting of the year at a new location, IWOSC/SPAWN VC Chapter will discuss one of the most vibrant parts of the literary world—Memoirs. This is a joint meeting for the Independent Writers of Southern Calfornia, and the national literary organization the Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network. It is open to the public.

Memoirs continue to increase in popularity amongst the book-purchasing public. In recent years the memoir has come to the forefront of American literature as a popular form for both writers and readers. The best seller list is often clogged with memoirs, or, at least, books that claim to be memoirs. Despite the nagging question of how true any autobiographical information really is, readers nevertheless devour books.

Dr. Diana Raab, award-winning author of nine books, will offer you tips and wisdom on how to write a compelling memoir at the first 2019 meeting of the IWOSC/SPAWN writers’ meetings, which have moved to Goebel Center in Thousand Oaks. Dr. Raab’s talk is suitable for writers currently working on a memoir and for those who have been contemplating writing one.

In her latest book, Writing for Bliss, she explains what is most fundamentally about reflection, truth, and freedom. With techniques and prompts for both the seasoned and novice writer, she leads you to tap into your creativity through storytelling and poetry, examines how life-changing experiences can inspire writing, pursue self-examination and self-discovery through the written word, and, understand how published writers have been transformed by writing. She will cover some of this material during her talk.

The meeting begins promptly at 6:30 pm and ends around 8 pm. Dr. Raab will have books for sale after she speaks. People are asked to RSVP to attend at: http://spawn.org/rsvp-for-iwosc-spawn/
