AFA’s 2020 Conference
Sunday, April 26
9 AM – 4 PM

Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel

Jew hatred is hardly new; for millenia Jews have been hated, with this hatred manifesting itself in ways that range from anti-Jew policies to implementation of comprehensive plans aimed at complete extermination.

But recently, there has been a surge of violence against Jews, of anti-Semitic policies and other means of suppressing and oppressing them.

The reasons for this are complex, wide-ranging, and frankly, difficult to grapple with. This conference will discuss the historic origins of Jew hatred; how it’s manifested itself over time; the various reasons for the current resurgence of Jew hatred and why there seems to be an increasing sense of permission to act on it; and especially, we will discuss how to combat it.

Our slate of speakers is outstanding, including experts on Islamic Jew hatred (a topic that is almost always shied away from in events on the topic of Jew hatred) , anti-Semitism in our Universities, Christian roots of Jew hatred, Jew hatred and the Left, efforts in Germany to combat it, the situations in France (bad) and England (better) and many other topics.

Join us for an illuminating day on this timeless and (unfortunately) timely issue.

AFA’s February Book Discussion Group

Douglas Murray’s

The Madness of Crowds:
Gender, Race and Identity

Author will NOT be present. This is an INFORMAL conversation about the book

AFA is kicking off our 2020 Book Discussion Group with a work that’s every bit as serious as past ones but also full of humor.  A few months ago I’d written that I was better able to face the bitter realization that I’m a conservative when I discovered the genius of Thomas Sowell; Douglas Murray is of that same caliber of thinker, in my opinion.  It’s a terrific book, and I have found, in the months since I first read it, that I wind up referring to it in countless conversations. It’s surprisingly, and perhaps unfortunately, relevant to too much that’s going on in our lives, our culture, our politics  The title doesn’t do justice to the sweeping scope and deep-dive details of the book, nor to the sheer genius of it. I’m reading it for the second time and I find myself howling with laughter, and weeping with frustration.  “Deranging” is the word he uses for so much that’s going on, and it’s exactly the right word.

The book description:
The challenging and brilliantly-argued new book from the bestselling author of The Strange Death of Europe.

In his devastating new book The Madness of Crowds, Douglas Murray examines the twenty-first century’s most divisive issues: sexuality, gender, technology and race. He reveals the astonishing new culture wars playing out in our workplaces, universities, schools and homes in the names of social justice, identity politics and intersectionality.

We are living through a postmodern era in which the grand narratives of religion and political ideology have collapsed. In their place have emerged a crusading desire to right perceived wrongs and a weaponization of identity, both accelerated by the new forms of social and news media. Narrow sets of interests now dominate the agenda as society becomes more and more tribal–and, as Murray shows, the casualties are mounting.

Readers of all political persuasions cannot afford to ignore Murray’s masterfully argued and fiercely provocative book, in which he seeks to inject some sense into the discussion around this generation’s most complicated issues. He ends with an impassioned call for free speech, shared common values and sanity in an age of mass hysteria.

Other issues that are major themes are the undermining of science, the viciousness of the “cancel culture” and how redemption in this era of social media is virtually impossible; all of this is ripping apart the fabric of society, of Western civilization in fact, in numerous ways.

Another reason for choosing this, aside from its brilliance and relevance and because I think you all will enjoy it tremendously, is due to Douglas Murray’s connection to Sir Roger Scruton, whose writings inspired us to have the Book Discussion Group in the first place, and who passed away earlier this month after a battle with cancer.  You can watch one of their many conversations here.

I “read” the book on Audible – Murray himself is the reader and this is one of the rare times when I think the experience of listening to it truly enhances the work.  When he reads passages of tremendous irony, with just the right inflection, it’s exquisite, like listening to music rather than reading it.  I’m also reading it in “hard copy” form but the audible version is a real delight.

For more information about the book, you can watch this short interview or this much longer one with Dave Rubin.

Please note that this is an INFORMAL discussion group and unfortunately DOUGLAS MURRAY  will NOT be present, much as we’d like him to be.

We’ll get together at the outside bar area of the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel on Wednesday, February 19th at 7 PM.    And even if you haven’t had the chance to read or finish the book, join us anyway for what is sure to be a fun and informative evening!

We hope to see you there!

With your support, we are able to host the exceptional and world-class events that are our hallmark, and that are fundamental to the preservation of Western Civilization.  As always, it sounds hyperbolic… but as events show us day after day, it’s not.

When the media, academia and the vast majority of cultural influences do their utmost to create a “reality” that is devoid of, and in fact, in total opposition to the truth, it falls to organizations such as this one to disseminate and support, in every way possible, the actual truth.  Only by shining the light of truth do we stand a chance against the juggernaut of misinformation, and only with your support can we do so.
