Why:    The Emmy award-winning film Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan, a remarkable documentary for audiences who love aviation, history and stories of heroism. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy was desperate for pilots who could take off from aircraft carriers, strike the enemy, navigate their way back to the ship and land safely. . .no easy task in the vast Pacific.  With only seven carriers left in the entire Navy, none could be spared for training. In order to train thousands of pilots rapidly, the Navy converted two coal-fired, side-wheeled, passenger steamers into makeshift aircraft carriers. Thus just off Chicago’s shoreline, the US Navy trained over 15,000 carrier pilots, including President George H.W. Bush.  This film is the story of the recovery of those rare warbirds and the ingenious training program that changed the course of the war in the Pacific. Using interviews, declassified film and stills, underwater recovery footage and computer generated recreations, Heroes on Deck brings to life a vital chapter of American history.
