Exhibit features senior art majors’ work ‘Shenanigans’ includes ceramics, drawings, paintings

The annual spring art exhibit showcasing the work of graduating art majors at California Lutheran University will run from April 22 through May 13 in William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art.

An opening reception for “Shenanigans: Senior Art Exhibit 2017” will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 22. The eight students featured in the exhibition will hold an artists’ talk at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28. They are Brittney Bednar of Agoura Hills, Livia Bowman of Orange, Ronny Camacho of Oahu, Ryan Cohen of Moorpark, Ashley Cruz of Simi Valley, Brianna Joyce Mercier of Whittier, and Makenzie Perry and Katherine Reaves of Thousand Oaks.

The exhibition features a variety of media including ceramics, charcoal, oil, watercolor and digital painting.

After exploring different mediums, Bednar chose printmaking as her favorite because it allows her to be hands-on with every project.

Bowman is a ceramic and decorative artist whose art is inspired by material culture and is intended for a domestic setting. She is earning a minor in art history.

Camacho specializes in figurative charcoal drawings. Self-taught by mimicking the style of classical sculptors, he has gravitated to portraiture and figure drawing.

Cohen is a painter and illustrator who works with both traditional and digital mediums. The published children’s book illustrator is minoring in multimedia.

Cruz, who is double majoring in biology, is an illustrator and painter who enjoys creating portraits with a combination of watercolor, markers and colored pencils.

An activist artist, Mercier feels she can bring about change through her art by using it to tell the stories of people whose voices aren’t normally heard.

Perry’s contributions to the exhibit reflect her studies and work in early childhood development as well as her love for nature and the environment.

Drawing and crafting her entire life, Reaves fell in love with watercolor her sophomore year and has chosen to focus on that medium for the show.

Cal Lutheran’s Art Department and Rolland Gallery are sponsoring the free exhibit and events. The gallery is located in William Rolland Stadium, which is north of Olsen Road near Mountclef Boulevard on the Thousand Oaks campus. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
