“The Faith of Donald J. Trump”

By Michael Hernandez

SIMI VALLEY—The intersection of faith and politics was seen at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Wednesday as evangelical co-authors David Brody (Jewish roots) and Scott Lamb (Baptist roots) spoke on “The Faith of Donald J. Trump—a Spiritual Biography” (2018)—a just released book which is a compilation of over 100 interviews (including both the President and Vice President along with his many spiritual advisors).

According to Brody:  81 percent of all evangelicals voted for Donald Trump in 2016.   Donald Trump “sees the world in absolutes.  Evangelicals see the world in absolutes.  Evangelicals are ridiculed.  Donald Trump is ridiculed,” said Brody.   “We have the culture warrior in Donald Trump.

“Trump is the product of American culture, not an anomaly to it,” writes David Brody and Scott Lamb. “Further, Trump is not an anomaly to either American religion in general or even American evangelicalism.

“Donald Trump seems to be on a spiritual voyage that has accelerated greatly in the past few years as he has regularly interacted with evangelicals.  That was the consensus of a great number of Christians.”

David Brody is an Emmy Award-winning, 30 year veteran news journalist who is the Chief Political Correspondent for CBN News, host of CBN’s Faith Nation, and the author of The Brady File.  He is also a political analyst on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC and has appeared frequently as a roundtable panelist on NBC’s Meet the Press.

Scott Lamb is a Baptist minister, a columnist for the Washington Times and a vice president of Liberty University in Virginia.  He has authored three other biographies with HarperCollins including “Pujols:  More Than the Game” and “Huckabee:  The Authorized Biography.”

“The Faith of Donald J. Trump” is divided into two parts with Part 1 (12 chapters) stated Lamb the “history of the Trump family—their religion and world view—and Part II (18 chapters) the story of the “campaign trail” and the “more juicy stories” said Brody.

Lamb used Luke 15—the Parable of the Lost Son—to describe President Trump who he described as the “younger son” that came back to his father.  “Who is closer to finding the gospel?  The (older) son who kept all the rules or the younger son” who found himself on the journey back home?

“When you’re president, there is a need to balance two important concepts:  law and grace.  Just like in the Bible, God establishes the law/commandments/moral code and He affords grace to those at the same time.  For God, it’s not problematic.  He’s sovereign, so He has it covered.  For us feeble humans, including presidents, it’s trickier.”

Brody spoke on how President Trump had delivered for the evangelical community:  the embassy going to Jerusalem, on pro-life, his Supreme Court appointment of Neil Gorsuch.

“While Donald Trump may have been the unlikeliest vessel, God works in mysterious ways.  The same can be said about Trump’s Faith Journey.  From his Protestant confirmation in Jamaica, Queens, through the wild ride of the seventies, eighties and nineties, and concluding with the laying on of hands in the Oval Office, we see that God can take any lump of clay and fashion it for His own purposes and glory.  That’s something Donald Trump and evangelicals can both be eternally grateful for.

“Soli Deo Gloria—to God be all the glory.”
