The Families of Alaska Flight 261 will honor their family members whose lives were lost on board Alaska Flight 261 on January 31, 2000.  This date marks the 20th anniversary of the Alaska Flight 261 tragedy, and the family members, friends, work colleagues, community members, and Alaska Airlines invite the public and news media to attend this beautiful celebration of life and commitment to aviation safety.

Family members will be coming to the memorial from throughout the United States.  They anticipate over 300 family members and friends, members of Alaska Air Group, first responders from 2000 and today, and community members from Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, will attend this memorial.

The memorial will be held at the monument dedicated to Alaska Flight 261.  The memorial will include the reading of names of all passengers and crewmembers who perished on board the flight.  Also included in the memorial will be:

    • Ecumenical remembrances by rabbis, ministers and priests from Ventura County and Seattle
    • Statements by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Agency, and the Alaska Air Group
    • Comments by family members over the past twenty years since the accident, and recognition for all those who helped the families immediately after the accident and throughout the years.
    • A fly-over by the United States Coast Guard and Ventura County Sheriff’s Department

Prior to the memorial, family members will be at the Alaska Flight 261 Monument at 10:00 am to do the annual cleaning and waxing of the monument.  The families will also attend other private events during this week.
