Family Fun at Camarillo’s Greek Festival
By Tim McCoy
This is a fun family event that we look forward going to every year for the past few years. The biggest draws are the music, dancing and food. There are also over a dozen vendor booths. There’s a variety of Greek foods such as lamb chops, Gyros, Calamari and things we didn’t know how to pronounce such as Baklava, Spanakopita, Tyropita , etc. There were even vegetarian dishes.
Always come prepared to try several desserts and/or bring some home. We shared Loukoumathes which were freshly baked yummy “Greek donuts” with cinnamon and nuts optional.
There was plenty to drink, Greek wines, Greek coffee as well as ‘normal’ coffee, sodas, beer, etc.. Last year I tried the Ouzo (a 90 proof Greek cocktail). This visit it was strictly fresh lemonade so I could share with my 6 year old.
The local boy scout troops volunteer to run most of the kid’s attractions (which include inflatables such as laser tag arena, bouncy houses and floating obstacle courses). This a local Church’s yearly fundraiser so after splurging on some extras, my wallet feels better knowing the money is going to a good local charity.
