Figg denied Mayor Pro-Tem post, Breeze became Mayor at Hueneme 12-7-15 City Council meeting

By George Miller

Here is the meeting AGENDA

The most newsworthy item:  Two factions of the council have been at odds since the election of Tom Figg and Jim Hensley to the City Council. In a continuation of the “range war” between the “Old Guard” (AKA:”Gang of 3″) council members- Silvia Munoz Schnopp, Doug Breeze and Jon Sharkey, vs. the ” New Guard”- Tom Figg and Jim Helmsley, Figg was denied the customary rotation to Mayor Pro-Tem and instead the majority appointed Sharkey. Interestingly, Doug Breeze was appointed Mayor unanimously. The majority also stripped the minority of all commission/committee appointments last month. In the November, 2014 election, Figg was the biggest vote getter and Hensley second, so there is an issue of perceived voter disenfranchisement here.

Rather than elect the Mayor by a general public vote, the City Council  Members elect the Mayor and also the Mayor Pro-Tem.

Meanwhile, both sides have said they would involve the District Attorney’s office in allegations of improprieties by the other side.

Hueneme council descends into further conflict, majority curbs newest members’ powersBy George Miller There were fireworks at the Monday 11-9-15 Hueneme Council meeting, over deep factional divisions in the City Council and executive officers. He was reportedly selected as the low bidder and received a “pro forma” approval by the […]
